Upgraded to the newest Ubuntu. Nothing is ever simple so, of course the Realtek 8187b wireless card on my Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 did not work on "Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic" as it did on "Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic".
The linked page on Ubuntu Forums got me going where I needed to be. Basically I had to recompile the drivers provided by Mr. Cuervo and the patch. The patch is not self-explanatory for those of us who have never patched source code on Linux, but once you understand how to use the utility, you are good to go.
